Favorite Dancers

We all have our favorite dancers. Those artists whom we look up to and admire and continue to help us work harder everyday. I learn new names and watch new talent all the time, but these five dancers are the ones that never fail to impress me and take my breath away. Here are my top five role models :)

5: Lucia Lacarra
Lucia is a principal ballet dancer with the Bayerisches Staatsballett in Munich. Her gorgeous lines and captivating expressions have bewildered me since I saw this video.

4: Alina Cojocaru
A member of the Royal Ballet, Alina guest performs with artists worldwide and has performed practically every role in the book. My favorite of hers being her adorable and innocent portrayal of "Aurora" in the "Sleeping Beauty."

3: Sylvie Guillem
Sylvie Guillem is arguably the definition of the perfect ballerina. Her legs extend for miles and her feet are more arched than any other foot I've ever seen. Her body seems to move without ever touching the ground. This was the first video I ever saw of her and my jaw literally dropped.

2: Svetlana Zakharova
Svetlana is a principle dancer with the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow as well as a guest performer around the globe. Built similarly to Sylvie Guillem with her arched feet and long lines, she is a gorgeous dancer but I think what captivated me was her amazing acting ability. She devotes herself to a role completely, body, mind and soul.

1: Polina Semionova
Polina has become a bit of an Internet sensation in the ballet world. As she dances in a music video that she was fortunate enough to be cast in, feeling just seeps out from her body with every perfect point of her foot or develope of her leg. I've never found another dance video that celebrates the human body quite as well. Polina has a beautiful womanly shape and is made up of practically nothing but muscle. Her genuine expressions transform her into a totally believable character. She is without a doubt my favorite ballerina.

Who's your greatest role model? What ballerina do you watch when you're in need of inspiration? Post a comment below to let us know :)

Thanks for reading!

  1. omg! i loved all of these dancers..but that is no surprise!
Lucia Lacarra: gosh, her performance was gorgeous and her long lines are GORGEOUS! she makes every movement look so effortless.
Alina Cojocaru: you're right, she does a very good performance with being innocent. and she was just perfect!
Sylvia Gulliem: i wish that there could have been a longer video but i understand that youtube can be lame at times:) her turns were perfect and well executed. she is so amazing!
Svetlana Zakharova: SHE WAS OUTSTANDING! enough said.
Polina Semionova: and of course, she is always a pleasure to watch!

thank you for posting all of these amazing dance videos:)

  2. Wow, I loved that video of Polina Seminova!! My favorite dancer would have to be Misty Copeland. She's a soloist with ABT and started at the age of 13! It always inspires me to know that success is possible even if you start late.

  3. In addition to Polina, I love Natalia Osipova and Darci Kistler.

    Beautiful post.

  4. My favorite of all is by far Sylvie Guillem. She is a magical dream on stage. I have just come from Milano where Sylvie was appearing as Manon in Mac Millan's "L'histoire de Manon" with Massimo Murru. A huge trimph. I have already seen her as Manon three times before, the first being in 1998 at the Paris Opera. Nothing indicates that time has diminished her powers, quite to the contrary. That amazing body, the extensions everything is still as amazing as ever. But this is not what really counts. Sylvie is such a great dancer-actress and every inch in her body, movements, facial expressions are fused in expressing the character she is portraying and to communicate feelings and sensations to the audience, I have never seen an audience as enthralled as that at the premiere of La Scala for Sylvie's Manon. When she finished a variation-solo of Manon at the brother scene, somenone at the audience cried out "Divina3 ane evryone burst into a thunderous applause. He was right. She is Divine.

  5. I absolutely adore your blog! i agree with all your favorites, but my dance idol is alina Cojocaru. She is what every dancer wants to be! She is beautiful and sooo talented! Be sure to check out her and her husband Johann Kobborg in their Don Quixote pdd. Its is breathtaking! Thank you again for this blog.... it is an inspiration for me!
